Ask Dr. D!
Is soda really bad for teeth?

The issue isn’t so much the soda itself as much as it’s the sugar. The sugar remains in the mouth and bacteria feed on the sugar. Once the bacteria eats the sugar, they produce (yup, they poop in your mouth) out acid. That acid then breaks down the teeth. Our mouths are pretty remarkable in that they self clean and usually do a pretty good job in about 30 minutes. However, if we are continuously sipping on a can of soda throughout the day, we are doing more damage to our mouth by feeding the bad bacteria in our mouth and preventing our mouth from ever getting to a clean state.
